Arthropods Associated with Sugarcane Leaf Spindles in South Africa

چکیده

The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is researching an Area-Wide Integrated Pest Management (AW-IPM) strategy against sugarcane thrips, Fulmekiola serrata (Kobus) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Unique monitoring techniques successfully implemented provided faunal complexes that might include natural enemies within leaf spindles. Twentyeight Thysanoptera taxa from three families, namely Thripidae, Phlaeothripidae and Aeolothripidae, were distinguished. F. serrata were by far the predominant species. Many taxa were scarce or singletons. Anthocoridae: possibly Orius sp.; Staphylinidae: Oxytelinae; Chrysomelidae: Alticinae: Chaetocnema sp.; Curculionidae: Scolytinae; Coccinellidae: Scymninae: Nephus cf. voeltzkowi Weise and Scymnus sp.; Corylophidae, Formicidae: Anoplolepis sp.; indeterminate Lepidoptera; Cicadellidae: Cicadulina niger Ghauri; Laelapidae: Mesostigmata: Ololaelaps sp. (soil predatory mite); Araneae: Clubionidae: Clubiona sp.; Thomisidae: Firmicus sp. were recovered.

Current Status of Research on Sugarcane Yellow Leaf Syndrome in Southern Africa

In the 1960s, yellowing symptoms in sugarcane were seen throughout East Africa. This was called ‘yellow-wilt’, a condition first described in Tanzania in 1962. The symptoms appear identical to those of Yellow Leaf Syndrome (YLS). In South Africa symptoms of YLS were first observed in 1994 and were conspicuous in varieties CP66/1043, N22 and N26, intermediate in N27 and less conspicuous in NCo37...

Sugarcane Nutrition and Fertilizer Use in South Africa

In South Africa during the past four decades considerable research has taken place on the nutrient requirements of sugarcane. Consequently marked changes have occurred in patterns of fertilizer use. The value of N, P and K fertil~zers for cane production is reviewed using field experimental data. Correlations established between soil and leaf analysis and crop responses to various nutrients are...

Improvement of Quarantine Procedures for the Detection of Sugarcane Phytoplasmas

The importation of sugarcane varieties from other countries is necessary for the breeding of new varieties suited to the diverse environmental conditions in South Africa. To prevent the introduction and spread of new diseases, it is crucial that any imported pathogens are detected before the cane is released from quarantine. Although not present in South Africa, Grassy Shoot (GS) and Sugarcane ...

Yellow Leaf Virus Strain Diversity within the South African Sugarcane Industry

Yellow Leaf Syndrome is a relatively new disease of sugarcane caused by Sugarcane Yellow Leaf Virus (SCYLV) and/or Sugarcane Yellows Phytoplasma (SCYP). Common symptoms include yellowing of the leaf midrib, sucrose accumulation in the leaves and leaf necrosis. Tissue-blot immunoassay and Titan One Tube RT-PCR are routinely used to determine the presence of SCYLV. Leaf samples taken from six imp...

The Macro-arthropod Community of Sugarcane Fields and of Cyperus Immensus Stands

Arthropods associated with sugarcane seven to eleven months old, and with the sedge Cyperus immensus (C.B.CL.) were collected at two monthly intervals over a fifteen month period. The search was carried out in each of four regions in the sugar industry. This work formed part of a project designed to study the predators of the sugarcane borer Eldana sacckarina Walker. Generally greater number of...
